Welcome to Phelps County, a rural south-central Nebraska area nestled within the heart of the nation. The county is home to a population exceeding 9,000, with its county seat, Holdrege, hailing as its largest community with approximately 5,100 residents.

Holdrege is followed by the villages of Bertrand, Loomis, Funk and its smallest, Atlanta, with approximately 130 residents.

The quality of life enjoyed in Phelps County is second-to-none and unlike many other similar communities in Nebraska and beyond. Its centralized Midwestern location at the junction of U .S. Highways 6/34, 23 and 183 - between the Platte River to the north and Republican River to the south - is ideal for residents and businesses alike.

PMHC is currently in the midst of a major expansion and renovation project, which will bring all private patient rooms, new OB suites and operating rooms, enhanced technology and overall improved and enlarged facilities. In addition to PMHC, the county is also home to a community-based outpatient VA clinic, health and specialty clinics, behavioral health resources, dentists, physical therapists, chiropractors, a podiatrist, optometrists, senior care services and several pharmacies.

Enjoying the outdoors in Phelps County is easy. Two parks covering 65 acres are available in Holdrege.

Between the two, guests take advantage of a public swimming pool, tennis courts, disc golf, picnic sites, playgrounds, lighted ball diamonds, camping and more. The area also features two golf courses and is an ideal place for hunting, fishing and birdwatching. Top outdoor destinations in and around Phelps County include Lake Seldom, Funk Lagoon Waterfowl Production Area, the Chicken Dance Trail and the nearby

Johnson Lake State Recreation Area (20 miles northwest of Bertrand) and Harlan County Lake (31 miles south of Holdrege).

Excellent recreational programming for all ages is available through the modem YMCA of the Prairie, built in 2006. The 40,000-square-foot facility is well-equipped with a fitness center, basketball and racquetball courts, an indoor swimming pool, an indoor walking track and group fitness space. More than 40 group exercise classes are offered, as are adult and youth sports programs, aquatics classes, personal training, an after-school program, summer camps and more. Additionally, seniors are afforded programs through both the Y and the Phelps County Senior Citizen Center.


There are plenty of ways to stay entertained while in Phelps County. History buffs enjoy perusing the displays and galleries at the Nebraska Prairie Museum, while others enjoy catching the latest flick at the Sun Theatre or taking in a friendly game of bow ling at Hasty Lane.

Enthusiasts of the performing art take a seat at The Tassel, Phelps County Center for the Performing Arts. This state-of- the-art, 22,300 - square-foot facility presents a wide cope of entertainment year-round, including theatrical performance, concerts, lecture and other social occasions.
