Southern Valley had three golfers in the top 15 and Alma had all five scores under 89, but the Eagle linksters edged the Cardinals by three strokes, 336-339, to claim the team championship at the Republican Plains Activities Conference golf tournament at Bertrand’s Hi-Line Golf Course last Thursday. Medicine Valley took the third-place plaque with 352 strokes, Cambridge claimed fourth with a team 392 and Bertrand brought home the fifth-place honors with 393 on the home course, two strokes ahead of Dundy County-Stratton.
The team scoring format called for the low four scores for each team to be counted.
The weather looked promising as the tourney began, but the day turned into a chilly, windy and rainy affair. RPAC golfers rose to meet the challenge as only nine strokes separated the top 15 golfers in medal play.
SV’s Spencer Brown claimed individual medalist honors by winning a first-hole tie-breaker over Cambridge’s Preston Carbaugh as both golfers shot 80s on the par 72 course. Alma’s Wyatt Gibson was third with an 81.
Viking freshman Austin Murphy earned an individual fourth-place medal on a scorecard tie-breaker over Southern Valley’s Ryder Lewis as both finished two strokes back at 82. Murphy went out with a 41, then carded another 41 on the back nine as the weather worsened. Lewis went out in 44, but closed with a 38 on the back nine.

The previous week in a dual match against Bertrand on the Hi-Line course, Lewis recorded a hole in one on the 153-yard par three second hole.
Backing Murphy’s 82, Tigh Renken shot 45 and 52 for a 97, Grant Dahlgren shot 52 and 49 to card a 101 and Brandon Dodson shot 56 and 57 for a 113. Adyson Furlong shot 53 on the front and 63 the second time around for a total of 116 strokes.
Today (May 4), the Bertrand golf team went to Cardinal Country Club in Oxford for the Southern Valley Invitational. On May 11, the Vikings will host their own invitational on the Hi-Line course. Monday, May 15, they will play in the NSAA District D-4 tournament at Arrowhead Meadows at Curtis. Other teams playing on the 36-hole par 72 course will be Alma, Arapahoe, Axtell, Elm Creek, Elwood, Eustis-Farnam, Franklin, Loomis, Maywood-Hayes Center, Medicine Valley, Overton, Pleasanton, Shelton and Wilcox-Hildreth. Qualifiers at the district level will play in the State Class D tournament on Lake Maloney Golf Course at North Platte May 23 and 24.
