Both BerMis Squads Beaten by Hershland

The BerMis Junior and Senior Legion baseball teams traveled to Hershey last Sunday with both squads suffering losses to the hosts.
The Seniors scored one run in the third and three more in the fifth, but that wasn’t enough to overcome Hershland’s offense as BerMis lost, 11-4.
Chandler Wagner started on the mound for BerMis and went two innings before Grant Dahlgren came in to finish the game.
BerMis’ first run scored on back-to-back singles from Drew Lauby and Wagner with two outs in the third.
In the fifth, Brian Hemmele was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by three straight singles from Riley Johnson, Lauby and Wagner.
The Juniors lost a heartbreaker on a walk-off hit in the last inning by Hershland, making the final score 9-8.
Brian Hemmele started the game pitching and Isaac Dunn went in to finish.
Hemmele walked to lead off the game and Riley Johnson followed with an RBI single. Aden Matejka drew a walk and Johnson and Matejka both scored on a two-run single by Spencer Rice.
Johnson crossed the plate again in the third after leading off with a base hit and scored on a single by Justus Harvey.
In the fifth, Isaac Dunn and Harvey drew walks and came around on a three-run home run by Andrew Dennis.
Matejka scored BerMis’ final run in the sixth, reaching on a two-out walk and scoring on an RBI single by Dunn.
Tonight (Thursday), the Seniors host Minden at Loomis for a 7:00 p.m. game.
Friday through July 11, the Juniors will play in their area tournament at Alma, games and times have yet to be announced.

Bertrand Days Sand Volleyball Tournament Saturday, June 24th had a tremendous turn-out bringing 16 teams to the court for a double elimination event coordinated by Shawn Hatfield.
Cornstars were named Tournament Champions.
Team members consisted of: Team Captain, Travis Kuck, Mariah Kuck, Spencer Gydesen, Mindy Gydesen, Tanner Fowler and Michaela Holen.
Second place finishers were ‘How Bout Dat’ with team members Team Captain Courtney Johnson, Jay Johnson, Ross Winheim, Maggie Winheim, Trey Barnes, Taylor Barnes and Riley Rabe.

After Rainout, Seniors Lose To Cardinals 15-2

Following a rainout on Wednesday, June 21, the BerMis Senior Legion baseball team entertained Alma on the following night.
The Cardinals roughed up BerMis pitcher Ashton Wasenius for five runs in the first inning, two in the second, two in the third and six more in the fourth frame to clobber the locals, 15-2.
Alma banged out three hits in the first, but was aided by a BerMis error, a hit batsman and two walks. In the second, the Cards strung together back-to-back singles and a bases-clearing double to take a 7-0 lead. Three Alma hits in the third resulted in the visitors taking a 9-0 lead. Alma staged its third two-out rally in the fourth to take a 15-0 edge before BerMis got on the board.
Wasenius led off the BerMis fourth by being hit, but he was thrown out at second. A. J. Matejka singled and came around to score on a single by Grant Dahlgren. Dahlgren scored on an Alma error before Aden Matejka grounded out to end the scoring. The two singles were the only hits of the game for BerMis.
The Seniors will be in action tonight (Thursday), when they will host Minden at Loomis for a 7 p.m. contest. Next Wednesday, they host Overton at Loomis (7 p.m.) and Friday, July 14th, they will again host Minden for another 7 p.m. game.

2017 Bertrand Days Tractor Pull Results

The Hi-Line Antique Farmers held their 11th annual antique tractor pull, show and drive on June 25th during Bertrand Days. Sixteen drivers and riders started the day off with a 15 mile antique tractor drive poker run organized by Allen Samuelson. Ralph Stehl had the winning hand with three aces. Second place went to Virginia Kipp, and in third place was Gene Samuelson.
At 1 p.m., exhibitors had the opportunity to parade some of the 33 antique tractors on display in front of the grandstand. Following the parade, Sarah Pelton, daughter of Nye and Christy Pelton, sang our national anthem. Monte Gregg was the first puller of the afternoon and made a full pull in the the 3000# stock class with his Minneapolis Moline model BF. There were 30 hooks to the sled in the stock division, 6 hooks in the open class division, and 1 hook in the exhibition class for a total of 37 hooks. Five teams participated the the Bohemian tractor pull with Sam Siekman’s team turning in the fastest time of 13.85 seconds. Edgar Estrada’s team posted a time of 14.15 for second place. Jake Gregg’s team earned third place with a time of 16.7.

BerMis Juniors Struggle At Overton Tournament

The BerMis Junior Legion baseball team had a rough go of it June 16th and 17th at the Overton Bandits Tournament. Friday, BerMis lost both games they played, falling to the host Bandits 13-0 and losing to Alma by the same 13-0 score. The locals bounced back in Saturday’s game, beating Curtis by a score of 16-7.
In Saturday’s victory, Ike Wahls and Spencer Rice each scored three times for BerMis. Brian Hemmele had three singles and scored twice. Isaac Dunn had a single and the game’s only extra-base hit with a fifth-inning double. Dunn also crossed the plate twice.
BerMis hosted Alma on Wednesday, June 21st and picked up an 11-5 win.
Alma scored three in the first, one in the second and one in the fourth while BerMis could muster only a lone run in the first, making it a 5-1 score before the locals broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth.
Eight BerMis runs crossed in the fourth and two more in the fifth to make up the final score. BerMis had only five hits in the game, but were helped by three Alma errors and six walks. Aden Matejka and Justus Harvey each collected two hits for the locals.
